Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
