The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
