On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
